How to Tame Cleaning Cabinet Clutter

Today, we’re sharing how to tame cleaning cabinet clutter in the kitchen!

For all my love of keeping things neat, tidy and organized, I must admit there are a few places I fall desperately short.

One of those spaces is my office.  I just can’t seem to get the right pieces in there that makes it both beautiful and functional.

Two, the cleaning cabinet in the kitchen which holds our trash bags, cleaning supplies, and microfiber cloths.

Honestly, it seems like it should be such an easy fix!

But over the years it’s become a bit of a dumping ground and while we’ve been working to make the kitchen as efficient as possible, I knew it was a great time to tackle this pesky area once and for all.

Here’s a look at how to tame cleaning cabinet clutter…

Take Everything Out of the Cleaning Cabinet

It’s hard to see what you actually have unless you see it all together!

Taking the time to completely empty your cleaning cabinet will allow you to see how many cleaning supplies you have, which items you have multiples of, which items are expired and those items that will need to be replaced soon.

Group Like Items Together & Take Inventory

We’ve been ever so slowly trying to transition to natural and plant-based cleaning products.  I’m not gonna lie it’s been hard at times with a senior dog that is incredibly messy, not to mention we have hard water.

Grouping like items together and taking inventory is another easy way to help you see how you’re using your cleaning cabinet.  We were able to see that we house way more kitchen cleaning products in the cabinet than bathroom products just by separating the products into groups.

It seems like such a small thing, but it immediately showed us, there was no longer a need to keep a single cleaning cabinet in the middle of the house for all needs.

Properly Dispose of Any Expired Supplies

Be sure to check the labels on your cleaning cabinet supplies before you dispose of any chemicals or liquids. The label (usually found on the back) will more than likely provide specific instructions.

Choose a Storage and Organization System

Once you have your kitchen cleaning cabinet supplies in one place, it will make it easier to decide which storage and organization system is right for you.

Some of you might need a pull-out shelving system, others of you might have to work around the pipes under your kitchen sink. Some of you might choose to use baskets while others might decide to use a clear box or drawer system.

Storage and organization systems are not one size fits all! Especially, when it comes to learning how to tame cleaning cabinet clutter

There are lots of tools available online and at big box stores so make sure to do your research before investing in a storage and organizational system.

We used a mix of baskets, clear storage drawers and a cleaning caddy.

Clean and Line the Cabinet

  • Use a small vacuum like a Dust Buster to make sure you have picked up any dirt, dust or pet hair that might be in your kitchen cleaning cabinet.
  • Next use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the cabinet.
  • Finally, line your cabinet with shelf liner paper.

Put Back Only Those Kitchen Cleaning Items You Actually Need or Use

After you have a storage and organization system in place, be sure to put back ONLY those kitchen cleaning items you’re actually going to use.

For example, we created a cleaning caddy specifically for kitchen cleaning supplies and created a second one for bathroom cleaning supplies which we now house in the bathroom linen closet.

This is going to sound like tough love, but it doesn’t do any good to take the time to clean out your kitchen cleaning cabinet only to clutter it all back up with half used and disorganized supplies.

Label & Maintain as Needed

This will likely be the hardest part of the process, save for choosing a storage and organization system but it’s worth the effort.

As you purchase or create new cleaning products or cloths, consider how you will store them BEFORE you bring them home.  Not only does this allow you to make sure you have room for extra products, it will also allow you extra time to use up what you have before buying anything new.

It’s kind of like using baskets in the pantry to keep things organized. For example, if we see our chip basket is full of chips we haven’t eaten yet, we don’t buy chips that week, it’s just that simple.

I know being and staying organized can feel like an overwhelming task sometimes. Especially, if you have a busy life with an active family.

That said, taking the time to set a good foundation in heavily used spaces like the kitchen will always be worth the investment no matter what time of year or season of life you find yourself in!
